Patrol 55 consisting of Air Scouts arrived at Algeria from Crystal Pool, on the 12th December for their 13h00 activity. However, this team amazed the electronics base staff by hiking into Algeria at 08h00 that morning, full of life and blowing their vuvuzela’s to their lung’s content. We agreed on a 10am start and they dropped to sleep within seconds once bags were off. This team swam at Crystal Pools, but hiked on further and camped over at Middleberg Hut. On the morning of the 12th they started early and completed their objective of getting to the base early, to rest before the activity. They rested again before a late afternoon hike to Sneeuberg after 17h00. They looked like organized hikers with organized objectives, while enjoying every moment of their adventure. The timed team event was completed in 5 minutes, 12 seconds. Which may even be the best times for this competition. Organised once again. Here are some pictures which tell more than the captions:
Some vuvuzela entertainment, then knocked out for the count...
Rosebank team focusing on Andrew’s introduction to making the electronic compass. On the right we have a GIBB banner, being a big sponsor of this base. The next picture starts off the drilling of the lids for the LEDs, Switch and Compass Sensor. Drillllllllllll...
More drilling… which also included, filing (shamphoring) and stickers/labels for the compass face.
And the fun begins… knowing how organized this bunch was, no injuries were expected and the hospital was asked to stand down. Solder away… as and when they reach their end stages, the scouts also take up the challenged posed to them by the “Drillmaster” Dipesh, on playing the Wiggly Buzzy Thing, This tests eye-hand co-ordination, and most of all, patience. Dipesh won nearly all the time.
Rosebank started their time trial activity with a blast, learning quick from their mistakes and achieving one of the best times. After receiving their prizes, the team posed for a picture for the sponsors, represented by Andre van der Walt of GIBB, and also our base leader.
After the base was over, the team sorted out their rations and packs preparing for their late afternoon trek. However, as every good scout knows, its important to eat. The 2nd pic below shows the team eating while socializing with base staff. The scout in the blue t-shirt, on the left of the 2nd pic is Andrew who arrived at Cederberg after attending a provincial Hockey tournament.
Enjoy your adventure team 55. With vuvuzela’s handy...
